Thessalonians I chapter 5

Thessalonians I 5:1

^B  Aþþan bi þo þeihsa jah mela, broþrjus, ni þaurbum ei izwis meljaima;

— περὶ δὲ τῶν χρόνων καὶ τῶν καιρῶν, ἀδελφοί, οὐ χρείαν ἔχετε ὑμῖν γράφεσθαι,

— But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

Thessalonians I 5:2

— αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκριβῶς οἴδατε ὅτι ἡμέρα κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτὶ οὕτως ἔρχεται.

— For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

Thessalonians I 5:3

— ὅταν λέγωσιν, εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια, τότε αἰφνίδιος αὐτοῖς ἐφίσταται ὄλεθρος ὥσπερ ἡ ὠδὶν τῇ ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσῃ, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐκφύγωσιν.

— For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

Thessalonians I 5:4

— ὑμεῖς δέ, ἀδελφοί, οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐν σκότει, ἵνα ἡ ἡμέρα ὑμᾶς ὡς κλέπτης καταλάβῃ,

— But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

Thessalonians I 5:5

— πάντες γὰρ ὑμεῖς υἱοὶ φωτός ἐστε καὶ υἱοὶ ἡμέρας. οὐκ ἐσμὲν νυκτὸς οὐδὲ σκότους:

— Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

Thessalonians I 5:6

— ἄρα οὖν μὴ καθεύδωμεν ὡς οἱ λοιποί, ἀλλὰ γρηγορῶμεν καὶ νήφωμεν.

— Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

Thessalonians I 5:7

^B  unte þaiei slepand, naht slepand, jah þaiei drugkanai wairþand, nahts drugkanai wairþand.

— οἱ γὰρ καθεύδοντες νυκτὸς καθεύδουσιν, καὶ οἱ μεθυσκόμενοι νυκτὸς μεθύουσιν:

— For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

Thessalonians I 5:8

— ἡμεῖς δὲ ἡμέρας ὄντες νήφωμεν, ἐνδυσάμενοι θώρακα πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης καὶ περικεφαλαίαν ἐλπίδα σωτηρίας:

— But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

Thessalonians I 5:9

^B  unte ni satida uns guþ in hatis, ak du gafreideinai ganistais, þairh fraujan unsarana Iesu Xristu,

— ὅτι οὐκ ἔθετο ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς εἰς ὀργὴν ἀλλὰ εἰς περιποίησιν σωτηρίας διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ,

— For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

Thessalonians I 5:10

^B  saei gaswalt faur uns, ei, jaþþe slepaima jaþþe wakaima, samana miþ imma libaima.

— τοῦ ἀποθανόντος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἵνα εἴτε γρηγορῶμεν εἴτε καθεύδωμεν ἅμα σὺν αὐτῷ ζήσωμεν.

— Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

Thessalonians I 5:11

— διὸ παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους καὶ οἰκοδομεῖτε εἷς τὸν ἕνα, καθὼς καὶ ποιεῖτε.

— Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

Thessalonians I 5:12

— ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, εἰδέναι τοὺς κοπιῶντας ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ προϊσταμένους ὑμῶν ἐν κυρίῳ καὶ νουθετοῦντας ὑμᾶς,

— And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

Thessalonians I 5:13

^B  <jah> sweraiþ ins ufarassau in friaþwai in waurstwis ize jah gawairþi habaiþ in izwis.

— καὶ ἡγεῖσθαι αὐτοὺς ὑπερεκπερισσοῦ ἐν ἀγάπῃ διὰ τὸ ἔργον αὐτῶν. εἰρηνεύετε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς.

— And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

Thessalonians I 5:14

^B  bidjamuþ~þan izwis, broþrjus, talzjaiþ þans ungatassans, þrafstjaiþ þans grindafraþjans, usþulaiþ þans siukans, usbeisneigai sijaiþ wiþra allans.

— παρακαλοῦμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, νουθετεῖτε τοὺς ἀτάκτους, παραμυθεῖσθε τοὺς ὀλιγοψύχους, ἀντέχεσθε τῶν ἀσθενῶν, μακροθυμεῖτε πρὸς πάντας.

— Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

Thessalonians I 5:15

^B  saihviþ ibai hvas ubil und ubilamma hvamma usgildai, ak sinteino þiuþ laistjaiþ miþ izwis misso jah wiþra allans.

— ὁρᾶτε μή τις κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ τινι ἀποδῷ, ἀλλὰ πάντοτε τὸ ἀγαθὸν διώκετε [καὶ] εἰς ἀλλήλους καὶ εἰς πάντας.

— See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

Thessalonians I 5:16

— πάντοτε χαίρετε,

— Rejoice evermore.

Thessalonians I 5:17

— ἀδιαλείπτως προσεύχεσθε,

— Pray without ceasing.

Thessalonians I 5:18

— ἐν παντὶ εὐχαριστεῖτε: τοῦτο γὰρ θέλημα θεοῦ ἐν χριστῷ ἰησοῦ εἰς ὑμᾶς.

— In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Thessalonians I 5:19

— τὸ πνεῦμα μὴ σβέννυτε,

— Quench not the Spirit.

Thessalonians I 5:20

— προφητείας μὴ ἐξουθενεῖτε:

— Despise not prophesyings.

Thessalonians I 5:21

^B  aþþan all uskiusaiþ; þatei god sijai, gahabaiþ.

— πάντα δὲ δοκιμάζετε, τὸ καλὸν κατέχετε,

— Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

Thessalonians I 5:22

— ἀπὸ παντὸς εἴδους πονηροῦ ἀπέχεσθε.

— Abstain from all appearance of evil.

— And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thessalonians I 5:24

— Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

Thessalonians I 5:25

— Brethren, pray for us.

Thessalonians I 5:26

— Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.

Thessalonians I 5:27

Thessalonians I 5:28
